What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of my understanding of different functions. Me and my partner were able to manipulate different values to make specific changes. We demonstrated that we had a deep knowledge of each part of these functions. We were also able to use Desmos efficiently to model our equations.
Which 21st Century Skills do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This assignment addresses information skills and interpersonal skills. Desmos is an online tool where you can perform a variety of math operations. It is especially useful for graphing. We manipulated the settings within the application to allow us to make our model. Understanding how online tools like these work is a very important skill for the modern world. It’s easier to integrate different tools after you’ve interacted with similar ones. It also has interpersonal skills as I had to communicate back and forth with my partner so that we could design our model. We used a combination of our ideas in our final product.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skills with this assignment?
I developed my information skills with this assignment with my deeper understanding of Desmos. While Desmos may not be used around the world as an online software, understanding Desmos will allow me to grasp other software's much quicker. Even if they are not exactly like Desmos, it will allow me to have the basics down and move on to the novel uses faster than another person. My interpersonal skills developed from this project from my communication with my partner.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult part about this task initially was understanding how we were going to make the picture for our final product. We knew how different equations looked but combining them with special parameters to paint a picture was a challenge. Eventually we understood how we could change different values and settings within Desmos to alter the image. After that we had a very easy time completing the assignment.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently? If I were to improve this work I would just add more detail to our picture. We could have added clouds and maybe some palm trees on the beach. Our slides were also kind of rushed and I think we could have made them neater. Overall I think we did a great job and our work was definitely worthy of an A+.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
This related to a lot of the units that we had learned previously in algebra 2. We used linear, quadratic, cubic, quartic and quintic equations to draw our model. This was just demonstrating that we had a full understanding of what each value in each equation meant. This built off of all the information that we've learned about graphing.
How can you apply this to future learning?
I can apply this knowledge to future assignments and in data analysis. Many of the equations that we used are commonly used to analyze different kinds of data. As I move towards the end of the year and taking my SAT, there are multiple questions that ask about data that I feel confident in answering. The unit that we are in right now is dealing with logarithmic functions and these concepts are definitely needed to do those equations.
